All about denims

A chic and versatile item of clothing—ideal for going out, wearing to work, or just staying in— the blue denim sees quite a number of revisions each fashion season. The best of 2013 look somewhat like this

MOST people would find it hard to believe that one of their most beloved items of clothing was invented in 16th century Europe for heavy-duty and manual labourers. This may sound preposterous to the fashion-conscious, who cling to their favourite pairs of jeans with demi-religious fervour. The word ‘denim’ comes from the French term ‘serge de Nîmes’ (meaning twill from Nîmes), a fabric that was originally a blend of silk and wool. ‘Jean’, on the other hand, comes from the French word for Genoa (in Italy). Sailors from the region were the first to wear denim trousers. And it was Levis Strauss (the man behind Levi’s, the holy grail of jeans) who created and popularised denim jeans as a durable alternative to other types of pants. Strauss gave us the American jeans, making denim pants one of the most enduring fashion statements of all time. It is amazing that the blue jean has remained an integral part of the fashion lexicon for more than three centuries. This chic and versatile item of clothing—ideal for going out, wearing to work, or just staying in—sees quite a number of revisions each fashion season. 2013, in particular, seems to be a great year for jeans. The Post takes a look at some of the hottest styles of the season.

DENIM JACKETS
Denim jackets were cool in the 90s, but then they somehow disappeared over the years. The most recent attempts to bring these back as a daywear classic feature a bit of playfulness. Denim jackets don’t have to be boring. Paired with pants, fancy shirts, youthful tops, a sexy blouse or even an evening dress!, these have the potential to look dazzlingly spectacular.

Baggy Jeans
A distressed pair of jeans worn with a chunky belt seems rather basic, but the baggy jean can make you look very in-trend this season.

SLIM AND SOPHISTICATED
A pair of ankle-length tailored jeans finished with a smart jacket makes for a more polished look. Those who want to look more uptown this season can opt for a pair of finely stitched slim denims.

SKINNY JEANS
Denim that fits like a glove has been all the rage for the past few years. Contrary to what most people think, skinny jeans—when worn right—can flatter most body types (wearing these right is key). Pair them with ballet flats, sandals, loose tops or flirty ones and instantly look the fashionista. Remember that neutral accessories give them a classic appeal.

RIPPED DENIM
It might not look very neat but ripped denim is getting trendier by the reason. The ripped effect is no longer restricted to jeans, and appears frequently on shirts, jackets and shorts on the runway. Combined with elegant blouses, lovely brooches, and even adorned with shining crystals, this effect can look stunningly spectacular when worn right.

THE PRINTED JEAN
Printed jeans were all the rage last year and continue to be appealing this year as well. You need to remember a few rules when you’re wearing printed pieces though. When mixing prints you stay in the same size range or colour family, and it is best to pair a solid top in a complimentary colour (when in doubt). Depending on the length of the jeans, you can wear these with boots, booties, heels or flats.

CROPPED JEANS
Cut just above the ankle, mid-calf or below the knee, cropped jeans are all the rage this season. These denims look best with high heels and add glamour and sexiness to any look.
